How to Disable Fast Startup in Windows 10?

Fast Startup also known as Hiberboot, hybrid shutdown, or hybrid boot is a Windows feature. It was first included with Windows 8, and is still present in Windows 10. Fast Startup gives a quicker boot time, it is one of the features that is used by numerous Windows users without even knowing about it. However many users find it useless and often prefer to disable it.

But in reality, it doesn’t shut down the system completely. What happens actually is that, when you enable the Fast Startup, the system store the image of Windows kernel and loaded the essential drivers in C drive as hyberfil.sys (hyberfile). Hence when you start your PC then it load the hiberfil in the RAM and then instead of restarting the complete system, Windows just resumed the last state of the PC.

This is how a hyberfil.sys file looks in C drive:

But hiberfil.sys won’t be visible in your system because it a hidden file. You will have to uncheck the “Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) from the Folder Options.

Why should you consider disabling the Fast Startup?

Some compelling reasons to disable Fast Startup are as follows:

  1. The hibernation file consumes a lot of space, hence disabling Fast Startup would save some space of your hard drive. This issue arises specially when you are using a SSD. As you know that the SSD hard drive is expensive and therefore most of the users have 120 GB or 240 GB drive.
  2. Many times it is seen that the computer does not shut down and the fans keep spinning, even after you perform a shutdown.
  3. There may be troubles with Windows update with Fast Startup
  4. Users have reported trouble with Wake-on-LAN when the Fast Startup is enabled.

How to Disable the Fast Startup in Windows 10?

You can easily disable the Fast Startup using the Power Options in Control Panel. Follow the steps mentioned below to disable the Fast Startup.

1. Press the Windows logo on your keyboard, type Control and hit Enter button.

2. On top right-hand side, click on “Category” and choose “Small icons” from the drop down menu.

4. Next, click on Change settings that are currently unavailable, present at the top.

5. Now under the Shutdown settings, unchecked the radio button that saysTurn on Fast startup (recommended).

6. Next, click on Save changes.

7. Now exit the Control Panel and restart your PC.
